Phil & Marilyn Koonce of First Presbyterian Church of Asheboro returned from a Habitat for Humanity of Greensboro sponsored trip to Honduras where they helped build homes and a church for people in need.
They reported enthusiastically to their church about the success and enthusiasm of the mission.

Habitat for Humanity of Randolph County
began with the congregation of
The First Presbyterian Church
of Asheboro.

Carolyn Chisholm of First Presbyterian Church of Asheboro expressed a concern that there were people in this county that could use such a ministry.
As chairperson of the Community Outreach Committee she initiated discussions about the needs and possibilities within the community of starting a Habitat for Humanity affiliate in Randolph County.
Under Carolyn's enthusiasm and leadership interest in a Randolph County affiliate of Habitat for Humanity began to grow throughout the church.

Charles Huff, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Greensboro, was invited to Asheboro to speak to the Community Outreach Committee. Other churches were invited
to come to a meeting as a show of outside support. The turnout was excellent.
Mr. Huff addressed questions concerning the concept of "simple, decent housing" and who Habitat seeks to help. He solidified the group
with organizational tips and encouragement.

A series of meetings were held. Support began to expand beyond the First Presbyterian Church. New Randolph County groups and individuals expressed
interest in supporting the idea of a local Habitat for Humanity affiliate.

The first Steering Committee met with the following in attendance: Harris Brown, Chester Cooke, Ron Defoe, Jeff Falter, Tim Garris,
Foster Hughes, Phil Koonce, Wes Moser, Harriet Murphy, Robert O'Brian, Linda Rogers, Larry Trotter

Steering Committee filed an application to Habitat for Humanity International to become an affiliate.

Habitat for Humanity of Randolph County was approved as a "Prospective Affiliate". The Steering Committee organized a Board of Directors
and created the following committees: Family Selection, Family Nurture, Fundraising, Site Selection, and Building.

Habitat for Humanity of Randolph County, Inc. was incorporated in the State of North Carolina.
That same month, the city of Asheboro provided the first building lot on Dennis Street.

Habitat for Humanity International changed the classification from "Prospective Affiliate" to Affiliate.
|
|
Land was cleared on Dennis Street in Asheboro and ground was broken for the first house.

Paula Gales of Liberty was selected as the first Habitat for Humanity of Randolph County family.
Paula was a single mother of two.
|
|
Dedication of the first house was held on a rainy Saturday. Paula Gales and her children moved into their new home.
